Hartlepool teenager Rhys Hewitt hit by car dies

A teenage pedestrian has died in hospital after he was struck by a car in Hartlepool.

Rhys Hewitt, from the town, was seriously injured on Brenda Road, near a bus depot at 19:00 BST on Wednesday.

The 14-year-old, a pupil at the English Martyrs School, was taken to hospital but died.

Cleveland Police said the driver of a Vauxhall Corsa car involved had stopped at the scene and that no arrests had been made.

The force said in a statement: "This is a devastating time for the family, friends and the school and our thoughts are with them.

"We are providing specialist support to the family and have begun an investigation into the circumstances of the collision."
