A major blaze at a chemical company saw plumes of black smoke sent into the air near houses.

The blaze at Melbray Chemicals in Eaglescliffe, Cleveland, which broke out at about 13:00, was extinguished by the evening.

The Durham Lane industrial estate was evacuated. No injuries were reported.

Cleveland Police had told Durham Lane residents to keep doors and windows closed, although they said the smoke was non-toxic.

Cleveland Fire Brigade said the cause of the blaze, which was tackled by 60 firefighters, was being investigated.

A spokesman said: "The incident was a fire involving plastic storage containers containing small quantities of chemicals.

"We used foam to bring the fire under control and to protect adjoining tanks."

Sections of surrounding roads were closed with drivers advised to use alternative routes.
