Newton Aycliffe and Spennymoor fire recruitment starts

A recruitment drive has been launched to find more firefighters to cover two areas in north-east England.

Officers at County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service need new, retained firefighters in Newton Aycliffe and Spennymoor.

The part-time recruits must be fit, over 18, be on call for 120 hours a week and live five minutes away from their station.

They are paid up to £2,877 a year, as well as by the hour during a call out.

Retained firefighters are not based at stations and are only called out in emergencies. Most have other jobs but must be able to "drop" everything to attend call outs, the fire service said.

Andrew Wells, a retained crew manager in Sedgefield, said: "None of us has to do this - we do it because we want to.

"Because of my working hours I have spare time during the day and I thought that training to become a retained firefighter would be a very worthwhile thing to do."
