Darlington assault victim critically ill in hospital

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after suffering a serious head injury in an assault in Darlington.

The victim, believed to be in his late 30s, was assaulted near Victoria Road at about 23:00 BST on 23 April, Durham Police said.

He is in a critical but stable condition at James Cook Hospital.

Officers have cordoned off an alleyway between Hargreave Terrace and Park Place and erected a canopy as a forensic team investigates the scene.

Insp Caroline Dawson said: "We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area surrounding the Co-op Pharmacy and Wing-on Chinese takeaway between 20:00 BST and 23:00 BST on Thursday evening."
