The parents of a 14-year-old boy killed after being struck by a car in County Durham have described him as a "polite and much loved son."

Matthew Dell, from South Church in Bishop Auckland, died when he was hit by a VW Golf car on the A689 at High Grange on Saturday afternoon.

The teenager, who was a pupil at St John's School in Bishop Auckland, was with a group of friends at the time.

His parents, Lisa and Andrew Dell said the family had been left heartbroken.

In a statement released by Durham Police, the couple said: "Matthew was a handsome young man, good mannered, courteous, polite and a much loved son and grandson.

"He was loved and respected by all of those lucky enough to meet him.

"His memory will linger in our hearts today and always."

Police have appealed for witnesses.
