A pedestrian was badly hurt when he was struck by a car, which then made off from the scene in County Durham.

The Peugeot was negotiating traffic calming measures at Blackhills Road, in Horden, at 11.30 BST on Saturday when it crossed the carriageway.

It went through metal railings, mounted the pavement and struck a shop and then hit the 72-year-old victim.

Durham Police found the car abandoned nearby and officers are trying to trace the driver.

The pedestrian suffered head and leg injuries and was taken to Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital.
