A man has denied the murder of a foster mother whose body was found in the burnt out remains of her home.

The remains of Norma Bell, 79, were found after the blaze in Westbourne Road, Hartlepool, on 2 April.

Gareth Dack, 32, pleaded not guilty to murder and a second charge of arson being reckless as to endangering life at Teesside Crown Court.

Mr Dack, of Windermere Road, Hartlepool, was remanded in custody ahead of trial on 22 August.

Mrs Bell had cared for more than 50 children throughout her life.
