Man charged over Asda Darlington stabbing

A shopper was stabbed while trying to help a supermarket worker detain a suspected shoplifter.

The man, 49, required hospital treatment after the incident in Asda in Darlington on Sunday.

Durham Police said the man was injured while attempting to help a female shop worker who was dealing with a suspected thief.

A 29-year-old man from Humberside has been charged with grievous bodily harm and is due at court on Tuesday.

He has also been charged with shoplifting, assault by beating and possession of a bladed article in public.

A force spokeswoman said the victim has been released from hospital and is recovering from his injuries.
