A man has admitted killing a 17-year-old motorcyclist who died in a crash.

Matthew Buckworth, 34, denied murder but admitted the manslaughter of Sonny Stephenson, who was killed in the crash in Guisborough, Teesside, in August.

Buckworth, of Charlton's Garth, Guisborough, also admitted attempting to assault a passenger on the bike.

Judge Simon Bourne-Arton QC told Buckworth, who appeared at Teesside Crown Court via videolink earlier, to expect a "lengthy prison sentence".

It is understood Buckworth threw a spade at the pair, who came off the motorbike and ended up in a ditch dug by road workers.

Emergency services were called to Bolckow Street at about 21:15 BST on 27 August and the road was cordoned off for several hours while police investigated the scene.

The 15-year-old pillion passenger was treated for minor injuries at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and later released.

Buckworth will be sentenced on 26 January.
