Man badly hurt in Gateshead street stabbing

A man suffered serious injuries when he was stabbed after he approached three people who were breaking into his van in Gateshead, police said.

It happened at about 0217 BST in Selkirk Crescent, Birtley.

The 43-year-old man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead. His injuries are described as "potentially life-threatening".

Northumbria Police believe one of the offenders may also have been injured in the disturbance.

Police said the man suffered several stab-type wounds to his body.

They are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
