Report of child in Tyneside flat fire false, police say

An 18-year-old woman has been arrested after two police officers entered a burning flat in South Shields, believing a child to be inside.

The officers were first on the scene at the property on Whitehead Street early on Friday where they found a distressed woman on the balcony of the flat.

The officers went into the flat to look for the child believed to be inside but realised there was nobody else there.

A woman has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The woman on the balcony was rescued by the fire service and received medical treatment.

Both police officers suffered the effects of smoke inhalation and were taken to South Tyneside District Hospital for assessment before being released.
