Lorry driver arrested after man dies in Newcastle

A 76-year-old pedestrian died after he was hit by a skip lorry in Newcastle.

It happened on Sunday afternoon on Shields Road, Byker, at its junction with Potts Street.

The man died at the scene and the road was closed for about two hours for investigations to be carried out.

The 48-year-old driver was arrested in connection with the collision and released on bail pending further inquiries.
