A £18m combined health and leisure complex is opening on Tyneside.

Blaydon Leisure and Primary Care Centre, on Shibdon Road in Blaydon, is a joint development between NHS South of Tyne and Wear and Gateshead Council.

It has a minor illness and injury walk-in unit, with breast screening, weight management, dental, and sexual health services also offered.

Leisure facilities include two swimming pools and a gym. The complex is officially opened to the public later.

Alan Baty, chair of Gateshead Primary Care Trust, which is part of NHS South of Tyne and Wear, said: "This is a very impressive new development which will benefit the whole community.

"The co-location of health and leisure services will ensure residents have easy access to the services they need to stay active and healthy."

Councillor Mary Foy, cabinet member for health at Gateshead Council, said: "Residents are not only going to be offered the very latest in leisure facilities and equipment at Blaydon, they will also have access to excellent healthcare services conveniently located in the same building."
