Girl guides on North Tyneside are to receive a top civic honour.

The organisation, which has 2,300 members in the area, is to awarded Freedom of the Borough in a special ceremony later.

Civic dignitaries and 40 representatives of Girlguiding North Tyneside will attend.

Music legend Sting has also been nominated for the award, but is unable to attend due to his schedule, so will receive it at a later date.

Councillor Glynis Barrie said; "Girlguiding North Tyneside deserves to be recognised for the way it has provided its members with so many interesting and exciting experiences, regardless of their background.

"It also offers the opportunity for people to discover new talents and explore their capabilities."

Vivienne Barke, county commissioner, said the award had come after a number of events to mark the centenary of Girlguiding, and would ensure it was a year to remember.

She added: "It gives us external recognition for the voluntary work we do with the young girls and women in the county, as we look forward to many more years of guiding fun."
