A machine allowing people to surf indoors has opened at a new leisure centre on Tyneside.

The machine generates a sustained wave, moving at 12mph, for surfing or body boarding.

Gateshead Council has installed the facility, the only one of its kind in the north of England, at its new leisure centre in Heworth.

The centre also has a swimming pool, a gym and a studio area for aerobic, dance and other classes.

It is the second of two purpose-built leisure centres to open as part of £36m investment by the council.

The first, opened in Blaydon in September, combines a healthcare centre with a swimming pool.

Councillor Linda Green, cabinet member for culture, said: "It's an incredible opportunity for our residents and the wider public to take up a new sport and develop new skills."
