Flood protection scheme approved for North Tyneside

Work is to start on the second phase of a major flood protection project in North Tyneside.

Northumbrian Water is to spend £4.8m on a one-year scheme to upgrade the sewerage network in Longbenton, starting in January.

The improvement scheme, which will take a year to complete, aims to reduce the risk of flooding to 80 properties in the Goathland Avenue area.

The £1.6m first phase centred on properties in the Forest Hall area.

The latest work will involve installing 1,800 metres of new sewer pipe in fields next to Longbenton Community College and in land near the Quorum Business Park. An underground storm water storage tank will also be built.

Residents have been told traffic disruption will be kept to a minimum.
