Gang of teenager rob man in Newcastle

A 57-year-old man has been robbed by a group of teenage boys in Newcastle.

Police said the robbery happened on Tuesday evening in Canning Street, close to the junction with West Road, in the West End.

A group of about eight or nine youths said to be aged between 12 and 14 approached the man.

He was punched on the back of the head and fell to the ground. One of the youths stole his wallet while he was on the floor.

The group made off along Canning Street towards an alley leading to Condercum Road.

The victim suffered soreness to his head and hand and was left shaken after the incident.

The youths were described as possibly being Eastern European.

The youth who stole the wallet was described as being about 12 years old, 5ft tall, of medium build, with a round face, cropped black hair and tanned complexion.

The victim told police he spoke with a foreign accent. He was wearing a black jacket, possibly a yellow T-shirt, and light blue jeans.

One of the rest of the group was described as being taller than the others, and appearing older.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
