Newcastle taxi driver attacks and robs passenger

A 20-year-old woman passenger was attacked and robbed by a Newcastle taxi driver in an unprovoked assault.

She got into the black cab in Collingwood Street early on Sunday and during the journey asked to go to a cash point near Cowgate roundabout.

The driver then dragged her out of the vehicle and stole her mobile phone. She suffered bruising in the struggle.

Police said he may have been worried she was not going to pay but that his behaviour was "unacceptable."

The driver was described as Asian, between 25 and 30 years old, and around 5ft 5in tall.

Det Insp Dave Culverwell, of Northumbria Police, said: "It seems the driver was perhaps unduly worried that he wouldn't get paid, but behaviour such as this is just completely unacceptable."
