Guard targeted in Newcastle garage robbery

A security guard was sprayed in the face with a liquid as he collected money from a Newcastle petrol station.

The man was returning to his vehicle at the Total garage in Stoddart Street, Shieldfield, at 0810 GMT when he was approached by a man.

The attacker sprayed him in the face with an unknown liquid and demanded the guard drop the cash box.

He got into a car which was later found abandoned and had been set on fire. The blue dye in the box had been activated.

Another person was driving the car which the attacker got into.

They drove off towards Armstrong Bridge, Jesmond Dene, where the car was found abandoned.

Northumbria Police believe the offenders may have got into a second car and both it and them would be stained with dye.

Any witnesses are asked to contact police.
