Driver hurt when sandbag thrown on to car in Byker

A woman was injured when a sandbag was thrown at her car as she was driving in Newcastle.

The 37-year-old woman was driving along Shields Road Bypass in Byker when it was thrown from a pedestrian walkway over the road on Friday evening.

It hit the car, smashed the windscreen and struck her on the shoulder.

She required hospital treatment for an injury to her arm. Police said the woman was lucky not to have been killed and are appealing for witnesses.
