Pedestrian seriously injured by taxi in Whitley Bay

A pedestrian suffered serious head injuries when he was struck by a taxi in a North Tyneside seaside town.

The incident happened early on Saturday on Whitley Road, close to its junction with Edwards Road, in Whitley Bay.

The 29-year-old man was taken to North Tyneside General Hospital, where his condition was described as serious.

Police arrested the 63-year-old taxi driver on suspicion of dangerous driving. He has since been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Any witnesses are asked to contact Northumbria Police.
