Six people escape from South Shields flat fire

Six people escaped after a suspected arson attack at a block of flats.

The fire, at the first floor flat in Victoria Road in South Shields, Tyneside, started early on Saturday.

Northumbria Police said there were six people in the flat at the time and three got out themselves while the others were rescued by firefighters. No one was injured.

A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson and was released on police bail.
