Gateshead murder investigation as baby boy dies

A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder in Gateshead after a two-month-old baby died.

The boy was taken to the town's Queen Elizabeth Hospital early on Saturday with serious injuries. He was transferred to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary and died on Sunday.

Northumbria Police said it was believed he suffered head injuries and post-mortem tests will be carried out later.

The arrested man remains in police custody, a spokesman said.

Det Ch Insp Andy Potts, who is leading the investigation, said: "This is a tragic loss of a very young baby and our thoughts are with those affected."

He said inquiries were continuing.
