Man held over South Shields flat arson

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after a fire at a block of flats on South Tyneside.

Six people were trapped inside when the fire started in the hallway of the first floor flat on Victoria Road in South Shields early on Saturday.

Three managed to escape through windows and the others were rescued by the fire service. No one was injured.

A 21-year-old is being held by police, another, aged 27, was released on bail.
