Ponteland village market to be held weekly

A Northumberland village market, which faced an uncertain future a year ago, is now proving to be so popular it is to take place weekly.

The monthly event in Ponteland Memorial Hall was down to as few as three stalls at one point.

Organiser Northumberland County Council, relocated it to the Merton Way shopping centre in June 2010 and there are now about 16 regular stallholders.

Due to customer and trader demand it will now be held every Friday, it said.

Councillor Ian Lindley, executive member responsible for markets at the county council, said: "This is a great example of a market that is going from strength to strength and having a real impact on the local community."
