Newcastle woman threatened by armed street robbers

Two masked robbers armed with wooden clubs threatened a woman in the street before stealing her bag.

The 18-year-old was targeted in Stanhope Road, near St James' Park in Newcastle, early on Saturday.

The robbers, who were wearing white surgical masks confronted her before taking her bag, containing an MP3 player and mobile phone.

Police said she was badly shaken but unhurt. They are putting on extra patrols in the area on Saturday night.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said officers were also studying CCTV footage taken in the area at the time of the robbery.

One robber was around 5ft 6ins, wearing a grey hooded top and the other was around 5ft 9in and wearing a red hooded top.
