Work has been completed on a £3.6m revamp of one of Sunderland's most popular open spaces.

Barnes Park closed 18 months ago for the regeneration project, which has seen the creation of a new lake bridge, play area and sensory garden.

Some of the 102-year-old park's historic features such as the cannon, bandstand and railings were restored.

Sunderland City Council plans to hold an official opening ceremony on Saturday.

The council successfully bid for a total of £2.4m from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund to enable the scheme to go ahead.
