Sunderland woman sexually assaulted in underpass

A woman was sexually assaulted as she walked home through the centre of Sunderland, police said.

The 22-year-old was attacked as she went through an underpass in Chester Road late on Thursday.

Northumbria Police said she was grabbed by a man who assaulted her and ripped some of her clothing.

The offender is described as Asian, aged about 30, with short black hair and of medium build. It is believed he was wearing a dark anorak type jacket.

The victim was left shaken but was not seriously hurt, a spokesman said.
