An 18-year-old woman died when a tree fell on to a car in high winds in Northumberland.

The woman, from Hexham who has yet to be named, died at the scene of the incident in Corchester Lane in Corbridge on Monday afternoon.

The area was experiencing gusts of almost 80mph at the time, which also caused disruption on the trains.

An East Coast train was struck by a tree near Durham. Passengers had to wait about an hour to be rescued.

No-one was hurt, but the train - the 1730 BST from Kings Cross - lost power.

No other significant damage was reported overnight, although the A68 was closed northbound for a time on Monday after a lorry overturned at Ridsdale in Northumberland.
