A body found in a river in Gateshead has been confirmed as that of a 76-year-old man who has been missing for two weeks.

Alexander Miller went missing from his home in the Whickham area of the town on 25 May, triggering a police search.

Mr Miller's body was found in the River Derwent near Rowland's Gill on Monday.

Northumbria Police said no-one else was being sought in connection with Mr Miller's death and a report was being prepared for the coroner.

Supt Dennis Shotton said: "Our thoughts are very much with Mr Miller's family at this very difficult time.

"I would like to express my sincere thanks to the public for their support over the past fortnight, during what has been an extremely difficult search."
