Taxi appeal over pedestrian death in County Durham

Police have appealed for a taxi driver who gave a man a lift a short time before he was knocked over on a rural road in County Durham, to come forward.

Darren Wake, 43, of Wheatley Hill, was hit by a minibus taxi on the A181, in the early hours of 22 May.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, near Running Waters.

Officers have now heard a voicemail message he left for family an hour earlier, saying he had been picked up by a taxi and dropped off in Sherburn.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Durham Police.
