A man has been arrested after a suspicious package was found in a County Durham village.

Army bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion following the discovery in the Coral bookmakers in Annfield Plain on Tuesday.

Police have now said that the device was not a bomb, and there was nothing to suggest the involvement of a terrorist organisation.

A 20-year-old local man is being held for questioning.

A spokeswoman for Durham Police thanked people for their co-operation while roads were closed during the operation.

She added: "There is nothing to suggest that this incident was linked to any extremist organisation.

"However, if local people have any continuing concerns about yesterday's incident, I would encourage them to contact their local neighbourhood officers."
