Arrests after Newcastle hammer assault

Two men have have been arrested after a man was found lying in a Newcastle road after being hit with a hammer.

Police believe the 32-year-old victim had been followed by two men in a white van before the attack in Stamfordham Road, near Blakelaw, on Friday afternoon.

The man was taken to hospital but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The arrested men, who are aged 18 and 40, were held on suspicion of assault.
