Northumbria Police seek 'lucky' metal thieves

Thieves who stole copper cable have been told they were lucky not to be seriously injured or killed.

They targeted a combined sewer overflow pump at a development site on Armstrong Road, Newcastle early on Tuesday.

The pump is used to carry water to the waterworks at Axwell Park View and it automatically activates when full.

If that had been the case the high voltage cable would have been live, putting the life of anyone who cut through it at risk.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "It's only through pure luck that the high voltage cables were not live. If there had been a bit of rain the pump would have been active.

"I'd urge thieves to think twice before stealing copper cables as if they are live it could have disastrous consequences."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Northumbria Police.
