Sunderland shop assistant struck with hammer

A shop assistant was injured when a man armed with a mallet attempted to rob a florist shop in Sunderland.

The man went into Wild at Heart, in Front Street, Hetton, and demanded cash at about 15:30 BST on Tuesday.

Northumbria Police said he struck one of the members of staff with a mallet-style hammer, causing her a minor injury.

No-one else was injured and the man ran off empty-handed towards railway street.
