Crowds gather for Sunderland Airshow

Thousands of people are gathering on Wearside for one of the largest free events in Europe.

The 23rd Sunderland International Airshow is featuring more than eight hours of flying displays over two days.

The event, over the coastline at Seaburn and Roker, also includes a fly-past by Spitfire and Hurricane fighter planes, and a Cold War bomber.

There will also be an RAF parachute team, acrobatic flying show and a display by wing-walkers.

Councillor John Kelly, portfolio for culture at Sunderland City Council, which organises the show, described the line-up as "varied, with something for everyone".

He added: "I'm very pleased that both a Supermarine Spitfire and a Hawker Hurricane will be at the airshow.

"These two aircraft were actually based in Sunderland helping and successfully defending the people and industry of the North East against bombing raids."
