Man dies after falling from cliffs at Seaham Carnival

Police hope to identify a man whose body was pulled from the sea following a carnival at a County Durham town.

The man, thought to be in his mid-20s, had attended the annual event at Seaham, near Peterlee, on Sunday, according to Durham Police.

It is believed he had been with a number of friends when he fell down cliffs near the town's North Dock.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place later to establish a formal cause of death.

Det Insp Dave Ashton said: "We understand the victim had been out in the town with a number of friends for much of Sunday evening, but at the point he fell from the cliffside into the water he is believed to have been on his own.

"When his friends came back they found him floating in the water, having fallen around 15 metres from the cliffside on the north dock of the harbour."

A file is being submitted to the coroner.
