Metro cables cut in theft attempt
Engineers worked through the night to repair a stretch of Tyneside Metro track after an attempted cable theft.
Operator Nexus said there was an attempt to steal cable from the line between Howdon and Percy Main in the early hours.
Three cables were found to be cut and engineers finished the repairs so the morning service could start as usual.
Last month a reward was offered for information leading to the prosecution of those stealing cable.
Crimestoppers and Network Rail have offered the £1,000 reward after cable thefts caused problems.
A Nexus spokesman said: "There was an attempt to steal some cables overnight but this did not affect Metro services.
"We are working closely with the police to step up patrols on the Metro lines.
"Our staff are being extra vigilant when they are working on the tracks during the night.
"Thieves take huge risks as the cables they are cutting through are live. They could be badly injured or even killed."
