Man held over attempted armed raid in Sunderland

A man has been arrested in connection with an attempted armed robbery in Sunderland.

Staff at an off-licence in the Roker Avenue area of the city were left shaken but otherwise unhurt in the incident on Friday evening.

Police said workers had been threatened by a man carrying a handgun.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said a 31-year-old local man was later arrested on suspicion of robbery and was being questioned by detectives.

Police have appealed for witnesses.
