A woman has died after falling 30ft (9 metres) from cliffs at a Northumberland beauty spot.

The 59-year-old, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident at North Sunderland Point in Seahouses on Saturday.

Police said the woman was not from the region and an investigation was under way to determine how she fell.

The area was being battered by torrential rain at the time, although this has not been linked to the death.

'Harrowing incident'

A Northumbria force spokeswoman said: "Officers attended the scene along with the coastguard and the ambulance service.

"We are not in a position to name her or give any further details on her identity at this stage until all family members have been informed.

"A report is being prepared for the coroner."

A spokesman for Seahouses RNLI, who assisted in recovering the woman's body, added: "It is believed that the casualty was a visitor to the area, and some family members were with her when the incident occurred.

"This was a tragic and harrowing incident and Seahouses RNLI lifeboat personnel would like to extend their deep condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, and our thoughts are with them at this sad time."
