Washington police station attack probe sees more arrests

Five more men have been arrested by detectives investigating an attack on Washington police station.

A policeman was hit by flying glass when a missile was thrown through a window early on Wednesday and a police car was destroyed by fire.

Two men, aged 17 and 19, who were originally arrested on Wednesday, remain in custody.

Northumbria Police said another five men, aged 17, 21, 22, 23 and 24, had now also been arrested.

They said the attack was an "isolated" incident and there were no other reports of disorder.

The officer was taken to hospital for treatment for a minor injury and later released.
