Charge over Washington police station attack

A teenager has been charged by detectives investigating an attack on a police station in Sunderland.

An officer was hit by flying glass when a window was broken early on Wednesday at the station in Washington and a police car was destroyed by fire.

An 18-year-old male has been charged with violent disorder and will appear at Newcastle Crown Court on 19 August.

Eleven men and one woman who were arrested have been released on bail and another man remains in custody.

Northumbria Police said the attack was an "isolated" incident and there were no other reports of disorder.

The officer was taken to hospital for treatment for a minor injury and later released.
