A Tyneside man accused of murdering his father has made his first appearance at Newcastle Crown Court.

Francis Willis, 62, was arrested on suspicion of murder after his 85-year-old father, also called Francis Willis, went missing from his Gateshead home.

Human remains were later discovered in the garden of Mr Willis Snr's home in the Carr Hill area. Tests showed the victim suffered head injuries.

Mr Willis Jnr made no plea on Monday and was further remanded in custody.

A provisional trial date was set for 23 January next year.
