Walking frame among Stanley metal thefts

A walking frame was among the items stolen by metal thieves in County Durham, police said.

Durham Police said the walking frame was taken from the back yard of a house in Tantobie on Saturday, leaving the owner "extremely distressed".

Police believe thieves are travelling around the Stanley area trying to spot metal items to steal.

They are urging people to be alert and report any suspicious activity.

Durham Police's Stanley neighbourhood inspector Amanda Cathrine said: "Stealing a walking frame which is clearly the property of a vulnerable elderly person is a despicable act and the victim, a woman in her late 80s, was left in an extremely distressed state by the theft."

The day after the frame was taken, five metal window shutters which had been removed and were awaiting collection were taken from a back yard at Stanley shopping centre.
