Hundreds of people are getting free check-ups in Newcastle's Metrocentre as part of the UK's first Thyroid Cancer Awareness Week.

North East cancer specialists are at the one-day event, organised by the local charity, The Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust.

Doctors have already checked 800 people, and referred 21 to their GP.

Kate Farnell, of Rowlands Gill, Gateshead, set up the Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust in 2001.

This followed a positive diagnosis of her own condition.

She said: "We want to get the message across if your find a lump in your neck you should seek a medical opinion. It could save your life."
