Northumberland play park vandalised in axe attack

Parts of a Northumberland play park have been forced to close after it was damaged in an axe attack.

The swings, climbing frame and four benches at the park on Millfield Road, Riding Mill, were vandalised.

The park, which is looked after by Broomhaugh and Riding Mill's Parish Council, was first opened by residents.

A 15-year-old was arrested in connection with the damage and has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Monica Anderton, Broomhaugh and Riding Mill's Parish clerk, said: "I know the nights are drawing in, but that's not the point.

"It's very important for the community as we're a small village and it's important we keep the facilities we have. I don't see the point in the absolutely pointless vandalism."
