At least 80 jobs are being promised after plans for a £3m hub for small businesses in County Durham were given the go ahead.

The development, at Consett Business Park, would be home to about 35 new and existing small firms when it is completed next year.

The project is being funded by Durham County Council and a grant from the European Regional Development Fund.

The site will also have conference facilities and broadband connectivity.

Communities Minister Baroness Hanham said: "This project is creating high quality workspaces which are a catalyst for employment, wealth creation and economic success.

"By addressing the demand for new workspaces this project will ensure new and existing businesses aren't forced to leave the area."

A spokesman for Durham County Council said: "This major development will be a welcome addition to the already successful facilities in the area and will make an important contribution towards satisfying the ever-growing demand for high quality business space."
