A man has pleaded not guilty to the murder of a Northumberland pensioner who was found battered to death.

Graeme Jarman, 47, of County Durham, is accused of the murder of Judith Richardson, 77, who was found in her Hexham home on 19 August.

Mr Jarman, of Delves Lane, Consett, denied the murder when he appeared at Newcastle Crown Court.

He was remanded in custody and the trial is expected to take place in February.

Mr Jarman was arrested in North Yorkshire after the discovery of Miss Richardson's body in the hallway of her home in St Wilfrid's Road.
