Steven Hardy jailed for life for John Hall murder

A man has been jailed for life for the murder of a man who was found dead in Gateshead in 1999.

John Hall, 34, was found dead in a back alley in Bensham on 4 August 1999.

Steven Hardy, 36, previously of Leven Walk, Brickhill, Bedford, had pleaded guilty in October 2010

On Tuesday he was given a life sentence at Newcastle Crown Court with a minimum tariff of six years. Mr Hall's family said they were "glad to finally learn the truth about what happened".

Hardy was also found guilty of drugs offences and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

A statement from Mr Hall's family said: "It has been many years since John died, during which we have lived not knowing what happened to him and who was responsible for his death.

"We are glad to finally learn the truth about what happened on the night and that the person responsible has been brought to justice."

Det Ch Insp Paul Young said Hardy would "rightly pay the price for what he has done".
