Shop worker stabbed in Wallsend attempted robbery

A shop worker has been stabbed in the chest during an attempted robbery in North Tyneside.

A customer found him on the floor with a stab wound at Rose Hill General Store in Northumberland Terrace, Wallsend, at about 17:45 GMT on Saturday.

The shop worker was given first aid by the customer before being taken to hospital, where his condition has been described as stable.

Three men, aged 22, 25 and 26, have been arrested on suspicion of robbery.

Northumbria Police North Tyneside Ch Supt Steve Neill said: "This was a violent robbery which is out of character for this area.

"I would like to reassure local residents and the business community in Wallsend that we are taking steps to quickly bring those responsible for this incident to justice."

He said there were increased patrols in the area.

Anyone with information about the stabbing has been asked to contact police.
